The spreading of walking insects can be prevented by arranging a tilted, smooth, solid surface, which is coated with particles of an amorphous silicic acid, in the spreading path of the insects. A dispersion that contains the particles of an amorphous silicic acid and a liquid dispersant can be used to reduce the retaining force of insect limbs on a solid surface coated with the dispersion.
