The present invention relates to a luminaire system, comprising a housing (1) and light emitting modules (2) disposed in the housing (1), wherein, the housing (1) has an opening (3) at one side opposite to the light emitting side of the light emitting modules (2), and the luminaire system further comprises at least one cover panel (4) and a controlling unit (5) configured to control the cover panels (4), the controlling unit (5) controls the cover panels (4) to close or open the opening (3). The luminaire system according to the present invention is capable of automatically opening and closing the opening of the housing depending upon the external environment so as to be well adapted to the different weather conditions and obtain optimal convection effect. Further, the present invention relates to a method for controlling a luminaire system of the above type.
