An energy storage system includes at least one weight 10 that moves along a bore 110 excavated underground. The system pumps oil or water 5 into the bore to raise the weights, and uses the fluid 5 to drive a hydraulic motor when they are allowed to fall. There is a seal assembly 19 between the weights 10 and the fluid 5. The weights are immersed in a second high density fluid 12 comprising a suspension of particulate material in a liquid. The particulate material may be a metal such as iron or lead, and the liquid may be oil. There may be means to agitate the suspension, such as a pump, or a mixing device which may use permanent magnets or electric coils in the weight or around the bore. The weight and the fluid suspension may have a density of approximately 2800 kg/m3. |
