[Class 81 (ii)] A pocket inhaler comprises a perforated nosepiece, a chamber containing fibrous material, e.g, trichlorethylene, for absorbing volatile analgesic or anaesthetic liquid one or more air inlets for directing air through the absorbent material to the nosepiece, a container for the volatile liquid anc means for feeding it to the absorbent material. As shown, the nosepiece 13 has a tubular extension 15 which is slotted at 16 and has a wick 20 of fibrous material surrounding the slotted portion. The base of the extension is surrounded by a mass of absorbent material 23 and is adjacent to the liquid container 22. The whole is enclosed in a casing 11, with perforated locating plates 18, 19, and an airtight screw cap 12. To release the liquid, the container 22 is broken by a sharp blow on the striking pin 27 which projects through the end of the casing. Alternatively, the breaking of the container may be effected by a screw-headed plunger or by a lever operated from outside the casing. In another modification, the liquid is contained in an unspillable reservoir situated in the end section of the casing, into which the wick 20 extends. The apparatus may embody an electric heater, and means may be provided for regulating the flow of air. The constructional material may be metal or synthetic resin. The nosepiece and the rest of the inhaler may be connected by rubber tubing, or the tubing may be attached to the nosepiece and a nose-cap fixed to the other end of the tubing. |
