There is provided a process for preparing compounds of formula M4A. The process comprises reacting a compound of formula M4X2 with a compound of formula (M2)2A, in the presence of at least one coordinating solvent. M2 can be chosen from Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+; M4 can be chosen from Cd2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Hg2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, and Pb2+; A can be chosen from S, Se, and Te; and X can be chosen Cl-, Br-, I-, F-, CH3COO-, NO3-, OCN-, SCN-, and CN-. There is also provided a process for preparing compounds of formula M1A. The process comprises reacting a compound of formula M1X3 with a compound of formula (M2)3A in the presence of a coordinating solvent. M1 can be chosen from B3+, Al3+, Ga3+, In3+, Tl3+, Fe3+, and Au3+; M2 can be chosen from Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+; A can be chosen from N, P, and As; and X can be chosen from Cl-, Br-, I-, F-, CH3COO-, NO3-, OCN-, SCN-, and CN-. Such compounds can be used in various fields including, for example, the field of electrochemistry.
