PURPOSE: A levan compound is provided to show a skin moisturizing effect without cytotoxicity, thereby being used in cosmetic products and pharmaceutical products. CONSTITUTION: A novel levan compound is denoted by chemical formula 1. A cosmetic composition for protecting skin contains 0.01-5 wt% of the levan compound as an active ingredient. The levan compound improves skin moisturizing ability over natural levan. An external use pharmaceutical composition contains the novel levan compound as an active ingredient.
