The method involves monitoring supply voltage (12) of a starter and changing speed of a thermal engine, during activation of the starter. A possible failure of the starter is determined. An origin of the failure is determined in case of failure. The starter is determined to be faulty and the origin of the failure is determined to be that insertion of a pinion of the starter is not correctly made when the supply voltage strongly drops at the time of application of the starter and quickly increases before end of a predetermined time period (t0) and when the engine speed is not increased.
