The instrument (10) has a selection unit to select an operating mode of electromagnetic wave transmission or reception unit comprising an antenna. The selection unit allows selection of the instrument between a data acquisition mode i.e. small swath mode, to allow unambiguous observation, under a small incidence angle (i1), of a sea surface zone (Z1) having small dimensions (E1) along elevational direction and a large swath mode to allow ambiguous observation, under a high incidence angle (i2), of another sea surface zone (Z2) having high dimensions (E2) along the direction. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a satellite (2) a method for pre-treatment of detection graph delivered at output of a transmission or reception unit of a radar instrument.
