The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device wherein productivity is high and it is possible to reduce costs and obtain a high contrast ratio in a wide visual angle range. This liquid crystal display device is provided in the following order with a first polarizer (2010), a first lambda/4 plate (2020), a liquid crystal cell (2030), a second lambda/4 plate (2040), a third first type of birefringent layer (2045), a fourth type of birefringent layer (2046), and a second polarizer (2050), wherein: the in-plane delayed-phase axis of the first lambda/4 plate (2020) forms a roughly 45° angle with the absorption axis of the first polarizer (2010); the in-plane delayed-phase axis of the second lambda/4 plate (2040) is roughly orthogonal to the in-plane delayed-phase axis of the first lambda/4 plate (2020); the absorption axis of the second polarizer (2050) is roughly orthogonal to the absorption axis of the first polarizer (2010); the in-plane delayed-phase axis of the third first type of birefringent layer (2045) is roughly parallel to the absorption axis of the second polarizer (2050); and black is displayed by arranging the liquid crystal molecules within a liquid crystal layer roughly perpendicular to the surface of a substrate. |
