Copolymers of acrylonitrile and conjugated dienes, such as butadiene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene, isoprene, 2-methyl pentadiene and 2,3-dimethyl pentadiene, are treated whereby at least a part of the double bonds of the copolymers are converted to epoxy groups which may be subsequently converted to hydroxyl groups by hydrolysis. The copolymers may be epoxidized by treatment in solution in formic or acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid. The treatment is preferably applied to fibre-forming copolymers containing more than 80 per cent of acrylonitrile in order to improve their affinity for dyestuffs. In an example the copolymerization is described of acrylonitrile and 2-methyl pentadiene in an aqueous medium containing dodecyl mercaptan and a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium bisulphite. |
