PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display unit which reduces light leakage in a dark state resulting from a rubbing process.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer is formed from a liquid crystal material which contains an ultraviolet-ray curable liquid crystal monomer in amount of more than 0 wt% to 1.0 wt% or less. Furthermore, the liquid crystal layer is irradiated with ultraviolet rays. The application of the liquid crystal layer to a liquid crystal display unit restricts the light leakage in a dark state and improves the black display level. Consequently, a liquid crystal display unit having high display quality with a superior contrast ratio can be obtained.
