PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element which is high in brightness and is high in a color rendering property, and an image display device and an illuminating device using the light emitting element as a light source.SOLUTION: The light emitting element comprises a phosphor as wavelength converting material, and a semiconductor light emitting element which emits visible light. In the light emitting element, the phosphor is at least one kind or more of phosphors selected out of a group consisting of oxide, oxynitride and nitride. Further, the light emitting element uses mixture of two kinds or more of phosphors having 35% or more of emission efficiency at a room temperature when being excited by the visible light from the semiconductor light emitting element. The mixture contains a first phosphor and a second phosphor different from the first phosphor and capable of absorbing the light emitted from the first phosphor. The first phosphor is contained in the light emitting element by 85% or more in a weight percent with respect to the mixture of phosphor.
