[Class 83 (iii)] A chuck of the kind in which a number of jaws may be moved towards and away from one another by transmission operated externally of the chuck comprises a compartment 21, Fig. 1, formed in the chuck body 10 and filled with an incompressible distortable substance 23 or liquid substance, a number of plungers so mounted as to be movable into and out of the compartment, means operable externally of the chuck for applying movement to one or more of the plungers, and means for transmitting the resultant movement of the other plunger or plungers to the chuck jaws 17 in a gripping direction. The substance employed may be natural or synthetic rubber preformed to the shape of the compartment or moulded and vulcanized in situ. The jaws 17 are bonded to a plate 19 by rubber portions 20 and are brought into engagement with the tool by rotating a member 13 in threaded engagement with the body which is provided with a bore 11 to receive the machine spindle. Gripping pressure is applied through a large diameter plunger 15 when a threaded plug 25 is rotated to stress the substance 23. In another embodiment plungers 41, Fig. 4, displaced by a member 42 in threaded engagement with the body are used to apply pressure to the substance 23 and a plunger 16 in contact with the jaws. Two other embodiments of the invention are described in which the tapered bore 11 for the machine spindle is replaced by a tapped hole which receives the threaded end of a spindle bearing on the small plunger in contact with the substance. To apply gripping pressure the body is rotated relatively to the machine spindle. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of an elastic envelope fitted with liquid instead of a solid rubber body. Specification 626,342 is referred to. |
