The method involves starting to establish a connection setup (3) for a connection according to the digital enhanced cordless telecommunication (DECT) standard procedures after the occurrence of a predetermined event i.e. bell ringing. The presence of speech activity (4) is examined, and a connection status e.g. 'call proceeding', 'call delivered' or 'active', is maintained and/or the connection setup is continued upon detection of the speech activity, where the maintenance of the connection status is independent of any timer operations. An independent claim is also included for a communication apparatus for operating a connection to a communication system.
