Class 110(3) An hydraulic turbine comprising a fixed propeller or feathering running vanes mounted on a vertical shaft 2 is provided with pivoted hollow brake vanes 6 partly filled with a loose medium consisting of a heavy liquid such as mercury or small bodies such as steel balls or shot. At a predetermined speed the medium assembles on the inwardly sloping inner face 6<SP>111</SP> of the outer wall of the vane and tilts the latter into the operative position in which the' medium assembles in the tip of the vane to retain it'in the operative position. When the speed falls to a predetermined value the medium flows by gravity to a position inside the pivot axis and tilts the vane back to the retracted position. The brake vanes are box-shaped with a flange 6<SP>11</SP> at one upstream edge and a chamfer 6<SP>1</SP> at the other. Each vane is hinged ori an axle 5 mounted in a segment 3 detachably secured to the runner body 1. Movement is limited by stops 3<SP>1</SP>, 3". Adjustment of the inclination of the surface 6<SP>111</SP> in the retracted and operative position determines the speeds at which tripping and retraction occur.</p> |
