The planar illumination device has a light source unit including a flat emitting surface (s1) for emitting light and a frame (7) in a frame shape, which encloses the light source unit and is arranged at an outer circumferential side of the light source unit. The frame is configured to hold the light source unit. The frame has a reflecting section for reflecting the light and an absorbing section for absorbing the light. The absorbing section is integrally formed with a section of an outer circumferential surface of the reflecting section. An independent claim is included for a method for manufacturing a planar illumination device.
