Water-soluble modified polyvinyl alcohol comprising 0.1-2.5 mol.% of carbonyl group containing repeating units (I), 0.1-5 mol.% of carbonyl group containing repeating units (II) or 90-99.8 mol.% of an alcohol group containing repeating units (III) is claimed. Water-soluble modified polyvinyl alcohol comprising 0.1-2.5 mol.% of carbonyl group containing repeating units of formula (CR1R2CR3-O-(CO)-R4) (I), 0.1-5 mol.% of carbonyl group containing repeating units of formula (CR1R2CR3-O-(CO)-CH 2) (II) or 90-99.8 mol.% of an alcohol group containing repeating units of formula (CR1R2CCR3-OH) (III) is claimed. R1-R3 : H, 1-5C-aliphatic hydrocarbyl; and R4 : branched or unbranched 5-20C, preferably 9-12C-hydrocarbyl. An independent claim is included for preparing the water-soluble modified polyvinyl alcohol comprising radically copolymerizing the repeating units (I)-(III) and completely or partially hydrolyzing the acetyl group containing repeating unit of formula (CR1R2CR3-O-CO-CH 3) (IV).
