PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with a balancer of gear driving from a crankshaft to suppress vibration of the internal combustion engine and reduce gear noise due to the gear driving, and to provide a control method therefor.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes: a primary balancer 12 that rotates in reverse with respect to the rotation of a crankshaft 4 via a gear drive device 11 from the crankshaft 4; an electric motor 14 that rotates in reverse with respect to the rotation of the crankshaft 4 via a belt drive device 13 from the primary balancer 12; an auxiliary flywheel 15 provided on a rotary shaft of the electric motor 14 via a clutch 16; and an ECU, having a first means, which engages or disengages the clutch 16, thereby increasing or decreasing effective moment of inertia about the crankshaft 4 in accordance with the driving condition of the engine 1, and a second means, which power-drives or regeneratively drives the electric motor 14 in accordance with crank angular acceleration, thereby controlling torque transmitted to the gear drive device 11 via the belt drive device 13. |
