The system has battery cells (Z1-Z4) switched into series, and a charge equalization module (400) for autonomously balancing charge of the adjacent battery cells. The charge equalization module comprises potential dividers i.e. resistors (Rc1, Rc2), producing an electrical potential based on an electrical potential of a negative pole one of the adjacent battery cells and an electrical potential of a positive pole the other adjacent battery cell. A comparison unit compares the electrical potential with another electrical potential. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for balancing battery cells of a battery system (2) a motor car.
