731,693. Making boxes. INTERNATIONAL PAPER BOX MACHINE CO. Sept. 26, 1952 [March 18, 1952], No. 24171/52. Class 18. A machine for folding down flaps of a flat box &c. blank onto other elements of the blank comprises means, moving relative to a line along which the blank is advanced, for upfolding a flap and stationary means for folding the flap down onto the other blank elements. In folding flaps leading the blank in its line of advance, pivoted rotating fingers 112 engage under a pair of flaps 30, 32, the blank being held down by conveyer chains 101, 102. The fingers 112 rotate in the direction of blank travel, but move slowly and turn up the flaps for engagement by the stationary folders 130 which complete the operation. Elements 150, rotating with the fingers 112, may engage the blank behind the flap hinge line 38 to prevent it rising. Tabs 34, 36 are given an initial downward displacement by elements 171 carried round on chains 170, and are partially folded by stationary folders 177, the blank then passing from beneath chains 101, 102 to chains 201, 202. Fingers 212, similar to fingers 112, turn up flaps 31 and 33, the folding being completed by stationary folders 230. Further stationary folders 260 engage the tabs 34, 36 to fold them onto the flaps 31, 33. The folded blank passes through conventional mechanism A for printing areas of adhesive B on the tabs. If trailing flaps such as 25 26,, 27 are to be infolded, fingers 517, Fig. 14, are arranged to be advanced by chains 510 in the direction of, and at a greater speed than the blank. The fingers are rotated by a fixed cam 550 acting on rollers 521 attached to the finger levers 514. Elements 650 functioning in a similar manner to the elements 150 may also be provided.
