In order that the material shall not be damaged by impact or friction at a point where the direction of conveyance is changed, a horizontal section 7 of the pipe line is connected to a vertical section 2 by a casing 1 into which an enlargement 6 of the section 7 merges. The speed of conveyance falls in the enlargement 6 and the material falls on to the sloping bottom 12 along which it travels and is directed by a pair of plates 9 into an opening in the section 2 formed some distance above its open lower end. Baffles 4, 11 deflect the air stream as indicated by the arrow 5 to enter the open end of the section 2. The baffle 4 is fixed, but the baffle 11 is pivoted and is held in the desired position by springs or a counterweight.
