The invention relates to improved monitoring or control of a machining operation on a workpiece (12), wherein a corresponding method comprises: detecting a first radiation component (28a) of a thermal radiation (28), with a first polarization of the thermal radiation, emitted by at least one surface-area element in a machining region of the workpiece; detecting a second radiation component (28b) of a thermal radiation (28), with a second polarization of the thermal radiation that is different from the first, emitted by the at least one surface-area element in the machining region of the workpiece; and determining from the detected first and second radiation components data values of a surface structure of the workpiece (12) on the at least one surface-area element. |
