A seal for a rotatable shaft 13 extending through a housing 10 comprises a ring 22 mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith and having its opposed faces 22a, 22b respectively sealingly engaged by stationary seal rings 39, 40 resiliently urged towards the ring 22 and carried by the inner peripheral portions of flexible diaphragms 28, 32 respectively whose outer peripheral portions 28b, 32a are resiliently urged into sealing engagement with the housing 10. The ring 22 is sealed to the shaft by a rubber liner 23 and clamped between a shoulder 13f on the shaft and a sleeve 21 which, at its other end, abuts an impeller 16. The diaphragm portions 28b, 32a are inwardly tapered and separated by a spacer ring 29 having ports 29c therein open to atmosphere through a groove in the spacer and a passage 41 in the housing 10. A spring ring 36 located in a groove 27 in the housing urges the diaphragm portions 28b, 32a into sealing contact with housing bore 24 by means of a ring 37 and the spacer 29 both of which have tapered surfaces 37b, 29a respectively abutting the corresponding tapered surfaces on portions 32a and 28b which latter portion abuts a shoulder 26 in the housing. The inner edge portions 28a, 32b of the diaphragms are gripped respectively between the seal rings 39, 40 and retaining rings 30, 33 respectively urged axially towards the ring 22 by springs 31, 34. |
