In filters of the kind comprising a substantially cylindrical straining wall having circumferential slots for radial flow, each slot having. an open end at a cut-away part of the wall where radial flow is prevented, and means for producing relative oscillating movement between the straining wall and cleaning knives (one in continuous engagement with each slot), about the axial region of the straining wall, so that the leading edge of each knife ejects foreign matter through the open end of the slot, the relative movement referred to is eccentric with respect to the straining wall, so that the knives are caused to emerge radially from the circumferential slots in the straining wall. Annular blades 10, each in two portions 12, are mounted on a central shaft 11 and spaced from one another by washers 14 on spindles 15 passing through lugs 16 on the blades. The circumferences of the portions 12 are struck about centres located on opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the shaft 11 so that on rotation of the latter half a revolution in a counterclockwise direction the slots between the blades, besides rotating relative to fixed sets of cleaning knives 19, 19a, move radially inwards relative to them also. The cleaning action of the knives particularly with respect to foreign matter adhering to the outer surface of the straining wall is thus improved. (For convenience of illustration the blades 10 are shown fixed and the knives as having been rotated almost half a revolution in a clockwise direction.) Radial flow through the cut-away parts 13 is prevented by washers 17 located in them and mounted on spindles 18 passing through the assembly. In a modification only a single cut-away part 13 in each blade, and a single set of cleaning knives, are provided, the periphery of each blade being drawn from a centre with a uniformly-increasing radius. The straining wall may be incorporated with the filter of Specification 361,681.
