<PICT:0626742/III/1> Hydrocarbons and oxygenated products are prepared by forcing carbon monoxide and hydrogen into a reaction zone containing a fluidized iron catalyst which is withdrawn continuously or intermittently, quenched, heated to at least incipient fusion in an oxidizing gas to agglomerate the particles and remove carbonacous contaminants, ground to the desired size, and returned to the reactor. In a delayed settler, bottom draw-off reactor, the bulk of the catalyst has a particle size of 40-200m , with less than 20 per cent of 0-20m . With an increase in fines through disintegration, coarse catalyst, for example 80-200m . is added. Used catalyst may be withdrawn by pipe 4, quenched to atmospheric temperature in water 6 or other liquid, e.g. alcohol, to which wetting agents or catalyst promoters may be added, withdrawn by conveyer 8, drained to about 21 per cent water content on 10, and discharged to mixer 12 where fuel is added if necessary. Coarse iron oxide, either unused or resintered from hopper 15, equivalent to 10-60 per cent of the catalyst to be resintered, is fed to a grate bar conveyer having a screen 14, the mixture from 12 forming an upper layer. The mass is ignited, air being drawn through and resintering occurring at a temperature of 2200 DEG F. or higher. The product in hopper 20 is ground, reduced if desired in hydrogen at 700-900 DEG F., and returned to reactor 1.ALSO:<FORM:0626742/IV (b)/1> Hydrocarbons and oxygenated products are prepared by forcing carbon monoxide and hydrogen into a reaction zone containing a fluidized iron catalyst which is withdrawn continuously or intermittently, quenched, heated to at least incipient fusion in an oxidizing gas to agglomerate the particles and remove carbonaceous contaminants, ground to the desired size, and returned to the reactor.
