In the present invention, there is disclosed a method of producing an animal feed that is free from transmittable degenerative encephalopathies wherein the method includes the steps of: (i) adding alkali to animal material to maintain a pH of at least 8.5; (ii) heating the material at step (i) to a temperature in the range 60 degC to 99 degC to achieve an aklai hydrolysis of protein present in the animal material; and (iii) dehydrating the material produced at step (ii). |
