<p>A product is made using an additive layer manufacturing process in a powder bed wherein at least one layer of the product comprises an area which projects beyond its previously formed layer, thereby forming a downwardly facing product surface 21b. A body 27 which functions as a support and heat sink is simultaneously formed in the powder bed adjacent the product with an upwardly facing surface 28 that is spaced from but conforms with the downwardly facing product surface 21b. The gap between the upwardly facing surface 28 of the body and the downwardly facing surface 21b of the product is preferably uniform. The body can be either solid or hollow. After the product has been made it can be separated from the body by peeling. The method can be used to make gas turbine components.</p> |
