PURPOSE: Apparatus capable of preventing power waste using a security system and a method thereof are provided to check power usage data at a change to a security mode and, in case the power usage exceeds a preset reference amount, generate a notification or block the power automatically, thereby preventing power waste. CONSTITUTION: Apparatus capable of preventing power waste using a security system includes a power usage setting unit (101) which sets a reference power usage value; a power usage receiving unit (102) which receives the current power usage data from each electric device in an office; a power usage comparison unit (105) which compares the set reference power usage value by the power usage setting unit and the received power usage data by the power usage receiving unit; and a security mode setting unit (103) which restricts the setting of a security mode in case the received power usage is greater than the set reference power usage.
