PURPOSE: A low power optical network terminal device capable of improving saving power consumption efficiency and an operation method thereof are provided to control electricity of an optical transmitter or a photo receiver associated with communication with optical line terminal (OLT) when the low power optical network terminating device is in low power mode and to control electricity of part configuration related to the network medium access control (MAC) processing. CONSTITUTION: A network medium access control (MAC) processing unit (301) transmits and receives optical line terminal (OLT) and traffic. A switch unit (315) receives the traffic transmitted from the network MAC processing unit. The switch unit delivers the received traffic to a subscriber terminal, receives traffic from the subscriber terminal and delivers the received traffic to OLT. When the low power optical network terminal device is in low power mode, a control unit (321) limits traffic transmission from the network MAC processing unit.
