PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for controlling an optical transmitter are provided to uniformly maintain an extinction ratio by controlling the operation of a laser diode of an optical transmitter. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling an optical transmitter comprises a light source and a control unit (24). The control unit monitors the intensity of light outputted from the light source and maintains the light output by controlling bias currents. The control unit sets modulation currents as a ratio of the bias currents and controls the ratio using a temperature.
