FIELD: process engineering.SUBSTANCE: invention relates to saw milling. Log type is defined, log diameter is measured, initial and final moisture content are measured. Log and square log cutting pattern is selected. Log is cut into square log and timber. Square log is cut into timber. Note here that possible losses in quality of cut timber in further drying are allowed for. Prior to selecting cutting pattern log and square log favorable zones are forecast to allow minimum losses in quality caused by buckling, cracking and polythickness. Distance from log and square log axis to outer face are measured for every plank to allow selection of plank width with minimum shrinkage factor of inner and outer faces. Forecasting can be performed using difference in shrinkage factors plotted to make a graph describing timber type, final moisture content, plank width, distance from log axis, and that of square log to plank outer face.
