Abstract - 601266 Disclosed is a process for reducing the metal content in metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil comprising the steps of: a) contacting the metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil with an acidic ion-exchange resin having sulfonic acid groups (suitable ion-exchange resins such the strong acid cation exchange type include those such as Dowex Marathon, Dowex Monosphere, Dowex HCR, Amberlyst, Amberlite, Purofine, Purolite, Monoplus, Tulsion etc.) to produce low metal biomass-derived pyrolysis oil and spent ion-exchange resin; and b) removing the low metal biomass derived pyrolysis oil from the spent ion-exchange resin, and wherein the step a) may include calculating the maximum volume (Voil) of the metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil per unit volume of resin that can be ion-exchanged according to the equation: Voil = Vr/(VCr*Dfeed), wherein: Voil is the volume of metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil in litres; Dfeed is the density of the metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil in kilograms/litre; Vr is the acidic ion-exchange resin volume in millilitres; and VCr is the minimum volume capacity of the acidic ion-exchange resin to ion-exchange a given mass of metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil expressed in mL resin/kg of metal-containing biomass-derived pyrolysis oil. |
