The method involves evaluating a soot mass or particles contained in an emission control system according to parameters such as engine speed, richness of an air and fuel mixture, temperature of outside air, air pressure or water temperature of an engine, and according to pressure losses measured between an inlet and an outlet of the emission control system, where the parameters are taken individually or in combination. An operating temperature of the emission control system is adjusted based on the soot mass or the particles contained in the emission control system. An independent claim is also included for an emission control system.
