The method involves providing a set of controllable power switches that are connected to form phase conductors. A polyphase machine (14) is allowed to have a set of potentials, and a direct current voltage. A set of bridge circuits is actuated in a mode such that the machine is provided with a number of poles. The set of bridge circuits is driven in another mode. An operating mode of the machine is adjusted in response to an adjusted speed range and/or fault condition of the machine.
