As an individual or a group of individuals view various types of humor, a webcam, using video capture, collects mental state data from the individual or individuals. The webcam data is analyzed to determine physiological data, facial data, and actigraphy data. Further, the direct collection of physiological data-electrodermal activity, heart rate, heart rate variation, skin temperature, and respiration-from an individual or individuals complements the webcam data. Analysis of this mental state data allows for the accurate comprehension of individual humor preferences and allows the individual's humor preferences to be used by the system to recommend humorous material based on these preferences.
