PURPOSE: An optical disk device and a method of operating thereof are provided to distinguish a recording layer number of an optical disc by detecting the recording layer number of the optical disc based on a first level and a second level more than a certain level among optical signal levels detected from 'the optical disc device for using one objective lens'. CONSTITUTION: A method of operating an optical disk device comprises the following steps: a first to a third of a light source unit of an optical pickup unit emits a respective light of a first wave length, a second wave length, and a third wave length; an object lens of the optical pickup unit condenses any one among the lights of each wave length to an optical disc; an optical detector of the optical pickup unit detects optical signals (805-825); and a controller distinguishes a recording layer number of the optical disc based on a first level a second level more than a certain level among a detected optical signal level.
