After tuning a klystron by deforming the flexible sheet metal outer wall of one or more resonant cavities, a hardenable material is poured between the flexible wall and adjacent rigid metal parts. The material, which is preferably a synthetic resin of the epoxy type, is capable when in the liquid state of wetting the metal, and after hardening adheres thereto, the hardening proceeding without shrinkage. The klystron shown comprises two resonant cavities 19 and 20 formed in a copper member 18 and connected by a coupling gap (not shown). An electron gun 11 comprising a cathode 12 and focussing electrode 13 with supply wires 14 is mounted in a glass bulb 10 which is sealed to a fernico ring 16. An outlet waveguide 25 seated by a mica window 26 is connected to a tapering waveguide 27 provided with a coupling flange 28. The space between the collect or electrode 31 and a surrounding integral wall 50 is provided with inlet and outlet water conduits 32. The electron gun 11 and collector electrode 31 are mounted on rigid plates 35 and 36 and are secured to flexible diaphragms 37 of a copper-plated alloy. Tuning is effected by a mechanism (not shown) after which a liquid material 40 is poured between the diaphragms 37 and the plates 35 and 36 to fix the diaphragm 37 in the position determined by the tuning mechanism. The liquid hardens and adheres to the surrounding metal, whereupon the tuning mechanism can be removed. Specification 607,203 is referred to.</p> |
