PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of commercially, easily and inexpensively producing the active carbon which is free from the fusion of a carbon particle during activation, is small and uniform in a particle diameter, and has a comparatively large specific surface area; and to provide the active carbon having a large electrostatic capacitance per unit volume. SOLUTION: The production method for the active carbon having 0.5-5 μm average particle diameter and 1,500-3,000 m<SP>2</SP>/g BET specific surface area for use in an electric double-layer capacitor electrode, is characterized in that after calcinating an easily graphitizing carbon material, it exhibits at least 4% reduction rate of an atomic ratio of hydrogen/carbon (H/C) or at least 5% volatile matter reduction rate, the resultant calcinated carbon material is subjected to activation treatment.
