PURPOSE: An apparatus for generating a mask image applying a threshold value differently according to area and a method thereof are provided to show a subject only, by dividing an image into several sections for an object located nearer than a subject, and applying a separate threshold value to the divided section. CONSTITUTION: A coordinate comparator (142) checks two dimensional coordinates of an inputted disparity map. A decision unit (146) judges whether the disparity map is included in a meaningful area or a meaningless area, on the basis of the checked two dimensional coordinate. According to the judgment result, a selection part (147) selects one of a first threshold or a second threshold of a threshold setting part (143). A masking part (148) generates numerous masking information including disparity maps larger than the first or the second threshold, by comparing the disparity map with the selected threshold.
