PURPOSE: A multimedia device and a method of controlling a power supply of the multimedia device are provided to play an audio signal of a source instrument' through the multimedia device with 'an action of turning of a power supply of the source instrument' without 'an action of turning of a power supply of the multimedia device' by controlling a power supply automatically by sensing 'an optical signal outputted from the source instrument'. CONSTITUTION: A method of controlling an electric power of a multimedia device comprises the following steps: a light receiving unit (110) receives 'an optical signal including an audio signal', converts the received optical signal into an electric signal; a controller (120) controls a power supply of a multimedia device (100) according to a voltage of the outputted electric signal; a power unit (130) supplies the power supply; a digital audio interface receiver (DIR) (140) extracts an audio signal from the electric signal; an audio digital signal processor (audio DSP) (150) decodes the extracted audio signal; and an audio output unit (160) outputs the decoded audio signal.
