PURPOSE: An adaptive cruise control apparatus and a controlling method thereof are provided to rapidly and properly react to a stationary object in front by braking automatically, changing the direction of a vehicle, generating an alarm, or activating an ABA(Active Brake Assist) when a radar senses a stationary object in front. CONSTITUTION: An adaptive cruise control apparatus includes a radar(10), a movement sensor(20), and a control unit(100). The radar senses an object in front of a vehicle. The movement sensor senses the movement of the vehicle. In case the radar senses the stationary object in front of the vehicle, the control unit generates a control signal in order to perform one or more among automatic steering, automatic brake, and alarm generation. The radar calculates the width of the stationary object. The control unit includes a determining unit(110) determining whether the stationary object is a vehicle or a dangerous object based on the width of the stationary object calculated from the radar.
