A growth-promoting feed supplement comprises a culture of a strain of Escherichia coli and a non-nutrient, growth-promoting, non-bacterial substance exemplified by the antibiotics penicillin, oxytetracycline, aureomycin, bacitracin and derivatives of these antibiotics, e.g. procaine penicillin, by the arsenical compounds arsenilic acid, sodium arsenilate and 3-nitro-4-hydroxy-phenylarsonic acid, and by the surface-active agents lauryl alcohol and ethylene oxide condensates. The strains of E. coli which may be employed include atypical forms, distinguished by cultural tests. For ease of mixing with the feed, the supplement may include a carrier, e.g. physiological saline, the culture medium, soybean meal, maize or other cereal meal, charcoal, Fuller's earth, ground oyster shell. Results are given of experiments involving the feeding of chicks with the supplement in a diet of ground yellow maize, soybean oil meal of 44 per cent protein content, dehydrated cereal grass, limestone, steamed bone meal, iodized salt, fish oil containing vitamins A and D, riboflavin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B 12, choline chloride, potassium iodide, manganese sulphate and the feeding of poults with the supplement in a diet of ground wheat, ground maize, ground oat groats, cereal grass, fish meal, meat meal, dried buttermilk, soybean oil meal of 44 per cent protein content, ground limestone, steamed bone meal, iodized salt, fish oil containing vitamins A and D, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B 12, manganese sulphate. |
