A method and an apparatus for authenticating a subscriber in a mobile communication system are provided to perform an authentication in a transmission/reception of a data message and a character message by performing the authentication classified by a call type in a subscriber authentication. A method for authenticating a subscriber in a mobile communication system includes the steps of: transmitting a call type service request message having a subscriber identifier and authentication information to a mobile switching center to perform a transmission classified by a call type including a location registration, a voice orientation, a data message, and a character message(226); determining the authentication for the call type service through the authentication information having the call type service request message received from the mobile switching center; checking a subscriber identifier by transmitting a subscriber identifier to a home location register and an authentication center(228); if the subscriber identifier is checked, performing the authentication process between the authentication center and the terminal(230); and if the authentication for the subscriber request call type is received from the authentication center, requesting to update the subscriber information stored in the home location register, and transmitting an authentication response message to the terminal(234). |
