PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focal point adjustment apparatus and method capable of improving followability in focusing in a case where a detection function of a face etc. is used and a subject distance is changed so as to enable a stable AF control.SOLUTION: An automatic focal point adjustment apparatus includes means 116 which detects a predetermined subject from an electric signal from an image pickup device 106, means 113 which generates a focal point evaluation value from an electric signal corresponding to a focal point detection area including the predetermined subject, means 114 determines whether a distance change of the subject exists or not, and control means 114 which adjusts a focus by a drive control of a focus lens 105. The control means has a first focus adjust operation mode using the focal point evaluation value of the focal point detection area, and a second focus adjust operation mode which moves the focus lens in accordance with the distance change of the subject by a drive amount based on at least the size of the subject so as to perform a tracking drive operation. When the distance change exists, the second focus adjust operation mode is performed, and when no distance change exists, the second focus adjust operation mode is restricted. |
