PURPOSE: An automatic teller machine capable of generating a master key and a method for generating the master key using the same are provided to improve security of a master key that is used in an automatic teller machine by building the automatic teller machine capable of generating the master key when a key is inputted in the automatic teller machine. CONSTITUTION: A method for generating a master key comprises the steps: carrying out authentication between a host and an IC card or between the host or an SAM (S21); when the authentication is completed (S22), requesting a first master key of the host (S23); requesting a second master key of the IC cared or the SAM (S24); receiving the first master key or the second master key (S25); generating a third master key (S26) and performing a predetermined operation with the first master key, the second master key, and the third master key (S27); producing a fourth master key through the operation (S28); and transmitting the fourth master key to the host for synchronization.
