The method involves authorizing launching of regeneration of a nitrogen oxide trap according to a parameter e.g. speed of car, representative of richness of operation of a power train so as to authorize the regeneration of the nitrogen oxide trap when the richness exceeds a threshold value. The richness of operation of the power train is compared (E1) with a minimal threshold value. The launching of regeneration (E10) of the nitrogen oxide trap is authorized when the richness is greater than or equal to 0.7 or with 0.8 or ranging between 0.7 and 0.8. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a code unit adapted to perform a method for managing a nitrogen oxide trap (2) a power train for a car.
