Disclosed are a user equipment (UE) capability enquiry and report method and device, the UE capability enquiry method comprising: a base station acquires from a mobility management entity (MME) the UE capability information of a terminal; the base station judges that the communication mode currently adopted by the terminal is different from the communication mode indicated by the UE capability information; the base station requests the terminal to report the UE capability corresponding to the preset communication mode. In the relevant art, the terminal adopting multiple communication modes does not distinguish UE capability information during the report process; as a result a network side cannot correctly acquire the UE capability corresponding to the communication mode adopted by the terminal, and some user functions cannot be used. The present invention solves the problem and improves the communication reliability of a multi-mode terminal.
