PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for sensing a material using a mobile terminal are provided to sense properties of matter through frequency of a sound generated through contact between the matter and the mobile device. CONSTITUTION: A vibration model (110) provides vibration to a mobile device. A sound detection device (120) detects a sound generated from the vibration of the mobile device. A calculation unit (140) calculates hardness of an object contacting the mobile device based on loudness of the sound. A determination unit (150) determines a matter type of the object based on the calculated hardness. The loudness of the sound is in proportion to the hardness of the object contacting the mobile device.
