PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition forming a pattern having not only a color tone of colored particles used but also a complicated feeling of depth by making a ground visible therethrough and to provide a coated film formed from the composition.SOLUTION: A water-based coating composition comprises colored particles prepared by encapsulating an emulsion coating with a gelled film. Translucent colored particles obtained by encapsulating the emulsion coating having 81-90% total light transmittance when formed into a dried coated film having 50 μm film thickness are contained as the colored particles. A coated film is formed from the water-based coating composition.
