Preparing an overlay (24,32) for laminates, comprises: unrolling an overlay-base paper (2) from a roll for forming a conveyable paper web; printing a pattern (4) on at least one side of the paper web by adopting a digital printing method; impregnating the paper web with a resin; and drying the paper web in a drying channel. Independent claims are also included for: producing a laminate for furniture items and floor coverings, comprising carrying out the above method to obtain the overlay, placing a decorative paper (22) on a base layer (20), placing the overlay on the decorative paper, and pressing the base layer, the decorative paper and the overlay by the action of pressure and heat; #the overlay comprising the base paper impregnated with a resin, which is printed with a pattern; and #the laminate comprising the base layer, the decorative paper and the overlay arranged on one side of the decorative paper, which faces away from the base layer.
